Are Sleep Consultants Worth It? A Nurse and Researcher's Honest View

A Registered nurse and researcher’s honest view on whether a sleep consultant is worth it. What they do, what they cost in Australia and how to choose one.

If you're wondering whether a sleep consultant is worth it, you're asking a fair question. It's your money. It's your baby. And it's your family's nights.

I'm Steph. I'm a nurse and researcher turned sleep consultant. And I'm a solo mum.

So here's my honest answer. For many families, yes, a sleep consultant is worth it. But the right one matters. Below I'll share what a consultant actually does, what it costs, and how to choose someone you can trust.

Before I was a mum

I've lost count of the newborns I've held. As a nurse, I cared for babies and their families every day. I saw how much sleep shaped a family's whole world.

I also worked as a nanny. I spent many nights lying on a bedroom floor next to a 5 year old who still hadn't learned to fall asleep on their own. I know what those long nights feel like from the inside.

Then came research. I was on the pilot team for GenV, Generation Victoria. It's one of the largest newborn studies in the world. I later managed its rollout across schools in Victoria.

So I came into parenting with a lot of knowledge. I understood sleep from a biological point of view. I thought I was ready.

When it was my own baby

Knowing the science didn't make it easy. It's very different when it's your own child.

I'm a solo mum. I didn't have the luxury of time or space. I still had to work. I still had 1,000 other things to do. I needed to find what would work quickly.

But I had rules for myself. It couldn't cause my son harm. And it couldn't leave me distressed either.

On the hard nights, I felt his crying in my body. Something inside me couldn't relax if I left the room. Sometimes nothing I did worked. Sometimes I had to step out for a minute. Not to leave him. To steady myself so I could go back in calm and help him sleep.

That's when I really understood something. Parents don't just need information. They need a plan that works for their child and for them.

Why sleep feels so personal

When I started my business, I was surprised by how strongly people feel about baby sleep. Now I understand why.

Sleep isn't just about sleep. It's tied up with love. With instinct. With exhaustion. With wanting to get it right for a tiny person who means everything to you.

Every family is different. What feels right in one home may not feel right in another. And that's okay. There's room for lots of approaches.

So when parents feel strongly, I get it. I feel it too. It means they care deeply. That's exactly where I want to meet them.

What a sleep consultant actually does

A sleep consultant gives you a clear plan built around your child. Not a generic routine from the internet. Here's what that usually looks like:

  1. Getting to know your family. You fill in a detailed intake form. It covers your child's age, sleep history, feeding, routine and what you've already tried.

  2. A personalised plan. Your consultant builds a plan for your child and your home. It should fit your values and what you're comfortable with.

  3. Tracking progress. Many consultants give you a simple sleep log. It shows what's changing night by night.

  4. Follow-up support. This is where a lot of the value sits. You get help adjusting the plan as you go, so you're not working it out alone.

The plan is the map. The support is what helps you follow it on the hard nights.

What does a sleep consultant cost?

In Australia, a package with a personalised plan and 1 to 2 weeks of support usually costs roughly $300 to $850. Longer support or in-home help costs more. Prices also vary with how you can reach your consultant and their experience.

When you compare prices, look at what's included. How long is the support? Can you message them between check-ins? Do you get a written plan you can keep?

My 1-on-1 Sleep Support Package is $399. It includes a personalised plan and follow-up support while you put it into practice.

How to choose the right sleep consultant

Sleep consulting is like any profession. Think about nursing. Most nurses you meet are kind, skilled and there for you. Every now and then, you meet one having a rough day. That doesn't change what nursing is.

It's the same here. I know a lot of sleep consultants. Almost all of them got into this work for one reason. They want to help families rest.

Sleep consulting isn't formally regulated in Australia. But there are recognised sleep consultant certifications. So the first thing to check is simple. Does your consultant have a certification? Ask who it's through and what it covered.

Next, ask what they did before they became a sleep consultant. Their background shapes how they understand your child.

Many consultants come from healthcare or science. Some are nurses or midwives. Some are psychologists. Some have a research or science background. These people have studied for years. They bring a deeper understanding of how babies grow, develop and sleep.

That background also shapes how they think. As a registered nurse, I was trained in 1 principle above all. Do no harm. After 15 years of nursing, it guides everything I do. Every plan I write starts there.

Lived experience matters too. A consultant who is a parent has felt those long nights for themselves. The ideal is someone who brings both. Formal training and real understanding of what you're going through.

A quick checklist when you compare consultants:

  • A recognised sleep consultant certification

  • A background in healthcare, psychology or science

  • Lived experience as a parent, or formal training in child health

  • Advice grounded in the science of how sleep develops

  • A plan shaped around your family, not a one size fits all script

  • Someone who listens and respects your instincts

So, are sleep consultants worth it?

For many families, yes. A good consultant saves you time. They take the guesswork out. They give you a clear plan when you're too tired to build one yourself.

A sleep consultant can be a great fit if you:

  • Want a clear plan rather than piecing together advice

  • Have limited time and need something that works sooner

  • Want support from someone who knows your child's age and stage

  • Want an approach that suits your family and your values

My approach

I built Tranquility around what I needed as a solo mum. Sleep support should be simple enough to follow at 3am. And there should always be a plan B for the nights that don't go to plan.

I'm a certified paediatric sleep consultant through Baby Sleep Consulting Training. I hold a Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) and graduated with first-class honours. My Honours thesis looked at people's communication and information needs. It's a big part of why I keep my plans simple and clear.

I bring my nursing, my research and my own lived experience to every family I work with. Because I've been the professional. And I've been the mum standing outside the bedroom door, taking a breath before going back in.

If you'd like a plan built around your child, and support while you follow it, you can book my 1-on-1 Sleep Support Package at tranquilitysleepconsulting.com.
